Susan Oliver is the British Embassy Tokyo’s Counsellor for Defence, Cyber, Security, Space & Aerospace. She has worked in Tokyo since October 2022 and is currently seconded to the Department for Business & Trade from the UK Ministry of Defence (MOD). Before her current posting to Tokyo she undertook a wide range of roles in the UK MOD covering economic security, defence engagement and military operations. The latter included short tours with the CV19 and Afghanistan task forces. Susan has undertaken two previous secondments to the Department for Business & Trade these supported Asia-Pacific trade development and government-to-government export relationships. Earlier roles in the UK MOD have included major defence programme approvals and international military capability cooperation with North America and Asia Pacific region. Before joining the civil service Susan spent over twenty years in the Royal Air Force. She served in multiple roles as an air traffic controller and operations officer. Her military service took her all over the UK and Germany, and to the Falkland Islands. Susan has a son - currently serving in the British Army - and when not in Tokyo, her home is the Scottish Highlands. She enjoys her Peloton and running; she is a ski instructor and fitness gadget addict.
